Union Books acquires trail-walking title

Union Books has acquired a "strikingly original" non-fiction debut, The Will to Elegance: How Trails Reveal the World, about the nature of trail walking.

Senior commissioning editor Robin Harvie bought UK and Commonwealth rights from Simon and Schuster US, in a pre-emptive deal. The title will be published in spring 2015.

Robert Moor's book, which the publisher likened to the work of Robert Macfarlane, William Fiennes and Rebecca Solnit, traces the formation of trails from the most tiny—ants, termites, tent caterpillars, neural pathways, minute fossil trails—to the most vast, including the International Appalachian Trail, the world's longest footpath, spanning from Alabama to Morocco.

Senior commissioning editor Robin Harvie said: "I was tipped off about Rob's proposal on a recent trip to New York. I was so excited by it that I spent a sleepless night wondering how I could ensure we published it. Robert's talent as a nature writer and a storyteller sing from every page, and we are absolutely delighted to be publishing this unique work of non-fiction."
