Unbound has launched The Star Witness, the first novel from “legendary” comedy scriptwriter and performer, Andy Hamilton, on its crowdfunding site.
In The Star Witness, Hamilton charts the descent into disgrace of famous soap star Kevin Carver, and his subsequent attempts to redeem himself. As a story of one self-regarding man’s journey back to the human race it “keeps the reader guessing to the very last page.” It is also a “pin-sharp satire on the shallows of modern media culture, and the dysfunctional relationship we all have with the idea of ‘celebrity’.”
Unbound publisher John Mitchinson said: "Sometimes publishing feels like a huge treat. Like millions of other fans, I’ve loved everything Andy Hamilton has written for TV and radio so I’m more than a little excited by the thought of helping him fund and publish his first novel. And the idea at its core - the disgrace and redemption of a soap star who makes a big mistake - is satisfyingly topical."
Hamilton said: "Unbound represents an exciting new way of doing things and I'm extremely taken with the notion of asking readers to be my patrons and finance the novel's production. It feels very modern but, at the same time, ever so slightly eighteenth-century (which, funnily enough, is how I see myself)."
Hamilton has made regular appearances on "QI" and "Have I Got News For You" and has written for "Outnumbered", "Drop the Dead Donkey", "Not The Nine O'Clock News", "Trevor's World of Sport", "What We Did On Our Holiday" and others. He also writes and plays Satan in the Radio 4 comedy "Old Harry’s Game".
The project has currently reached 55% of its funding target.
