Unbound has launched crowdfunding for an anthology celebrating the life of David Bowie, featuring contributions from a host of stellar writers including Neil Gaiman, William Gibson, Roddy Doyle, Suzanne Moore and Evie Wyld.
Fill Your Heart: Writers on Bowie will be a collection of personal responses to Bowie's work edited by novelist Tiffany Murray. Whether fiction, poetry, memoir or psychogeography, each piece will pay tribute to how Bowie inspired and influenced creatives from all disciplines.
Murray is the author of Diamond Star Halo (Portobello), and was brought up at the Rockfield Studios in Monmouthshire, where her father was a record producer and her mother the in-house cook. The world’s first residential recording facility, Rockfield Studios played host to such rockstar royalty as Freddie Mercury, Oasis and David Bowie himself.
Murray said: “I wanted to bring writers and artists together to create some kind of great nod to how David Bowie and his work has shaped us. Fill Your Heart will celebrate Bowie with creativity, adventure, and maybe even a little playfulness; it will be a bold anthology, that in some way shows how he sparked each generation’s imagination: how he made us.”
Publisher John Mitchinson said: “Bowie changed everything. He gave a whole generation permission to invent and re-ivent itself, leading by example, never resting on his laurels. And words inspired him every bit as much as music. He was a voracious and deeply intelligent reader of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry and his favourite books range from popular classics to the latest literary experiments. So, this book is a chance for writers to acknowledge this eclectic legacy: less of a tribute album, more a collection of new songs animated by his spirit.”
The full list of contributors includes Simon Armitage, Paul Burston, Peter Carpenter, Horatio Clare, Roddy Doyle, Stella Duffy, Charles Fernyhough, Ryan Gattis, Neil Gaiman, William Gibson, Niven Govinden, Lavinia Greenlaw, Nick Harkaway, Tom Hickox, Dr Sarah Hill, Dylan Jones, John Kelly, Gary Kemp, Rory Maclean, Suzanne Moore, John Niven, Daniel Rachel, Sarah Salway, Owen Sheers, Sijon, Wesley Stace, Rupert Thomson, VIZ, Evie Wyld, and Louisa Young.
