Unbound has launched a crowdfunding campaign to publish a graphic novel adaptation of Michael Rosen’s You’re Thinking About Tomatoes, originally published in 2005 by Barn Owl Books.
The graphic novel version will feature new artwork by Cole Henley (Quentin Blake did the picture book), who contacted Michael about the project online late last year.
Unbound is hoping to raise £14,000 to publish a 128-page, full cover hardback and backers can pledge between £15, which will get them a limited edition hardback and their name in the back of the book, and £1,000 for a whole host of rewards, including 10 first editions and an art print.
You’re Thinking About Tomatoes is about a boy called Frank who goes on a school trip to a stately home. Once he has arrived Frank realises that things are going wrong and the exhibits are coming alive.
Since December 2018 Rosen has been performing the book on his YouTube channel, Kids’ Poems and Stories with Michael Rosen, which has prompted renewed interest in the story, according to Unbound.
“‘I’m over the moon our crowdfunding campaign is happening,” said Rosen. “I’ve dreamed of sharing in the making of a graphic novel for years. The literacy benefits of reading comics are well documented among primary school-age children.”
Lizzie Kaye, commissioning editor for graphic novels at Unbound, said: "We are so excited to be working with Michael and Cole on bringing this new graphic novel to life. They’re creating a beautiful book that will be utterly engaging for a wide range of readers, but most especially for a younger audience. I can think of no better way to be introduced to the magic of comics than through Michael’s words and Cole’s art.”
