Transworld has bought the rights to three books in a "phenomenal" historical series by Giles Kristian.
Editorial director Simon Taylor acquired UK, Commonwealth and exclusive Europe rights through Bill Hamilton at A. M. Heath.
The Bleeding Land will be the first title in the series and will follow the fortunes of a family in the English Civil War. Kristian said: "My intention is to write a series set within the period – the major battles and twists and turns of the war serving as the markers – with each book being a ‘stand alone’ story."
Taylor said: "When my canny ex-colleague Katie Espiner brought Giles on board with the brutally exciting Raven series, we knew we had a star on our hands. He’s a supremely talented novelist and whether he’s writing heart-in-mouth battle scenes full of blood and thunder or evoking the impact of such turmoil on the lives of ordinary people, he is wholly at ease with his chosen milieu. This new series is going to be phenomenal. It pushes all the right historical fiction buttons and, let’s be honest, who can resist a corking story of Cavaliers vs Roundheads."
Kristian's previously title was his debut novel, Raven: Blood Eye (Bantam Press). The second novel in the series, Sons of Thunder is due for publication by Bantam Press in February 2010, with the third Raven novel scheduled for early 2011. No date has been scheduled for the new titles.
