Chris Moon and Yasmin al Naib, filmmakers from the National Film and Television School (NFTS), have been announced as the overall winners of the third annual Book Video Awards, run by The Bookseller and Random House.
After just over a month of voting via Foyles.co.uk, the award's retail partner's website, the pair's book trailer for Jo Nesbo's The Snowman, fought off competition from the three other winning films, also made by NFTS students, to receive nearly 40% of the public vote. In a surprise announcement the filmmakers have been commissioned by Random House to produce another book-trailer for Nesbo's next title.
The result was announced at an awards night on Friday 15th October held at Foyles on Charing Cross Road. All four 90 second films, based on Crime and Thriller titles published by Random House, and made with the finalist's £5000 winnings, were screened at the event. The other finalists and books were James Griffiths (Blood’s a Rover by James Ellroy); Nele Hecht (Blood Harvest by S J Bolton); and Tanel Toom (Hypothermia by Arnaldur Indriðason).
Nik Powell, director of NFTS, said on seeing the quality of the trailers that "it is hard to remember that they are not cut together from pre-existing films, but created entirely from scratch."
