Trade praise for Carnegie and Greenaway winners

The trade has praised CILIP’s Carnegie and Kate Greenaway award winners, claiming the choice will bring a welcome focus to historical and non-fiction children’s stories.

The winner of this year’s Carnegie Medal, announced  on Monday (22nd June), was 19th century-set Buffalo Soldier by Tanya Landman (Walker Books), a novel about a former slave who disguises herself in order to join the US Army. Author and illustrator William Grill won the Kate Greenaway award for his picture book Shackleton’s Journey (Flying Eye), based on Ernest Shackleton’s attempt to cross Antarctica in 1914.
