Former Penguin communications manager Toby Jones has been hired as group marketing and publicity director by Simon & Schuster.
Jones, who left Penguin in 2013 to go travelling, will begin at S&S on 1st July and report to chief executive and publisher Ian Chapman.
Marketing director Dawn Burnett, communications director Hannah Corbett and children’s marketing and publicity director Elisa Offord will all report to Jones.
Chapman said: “Our goal as a publisher is to attract the best authors and to connect them, in imaginative ways, to the biggest possible audience. Toby has an obvious love of publishing, and his experience brings a fresh perspective to how we can engage readers. Our marketing and publicity teams are fantastically inventive in promoting our titles and I’m confident that Toby will help them to build on that success”.
Jones commented that S&S had an exceptional roster of writers matched by an ambitious vision for the business. “With new ways of reaching and understanding readers, there are more creative opportunities than ever before to find audiences for authors,” he said. “I look forward to working with such a talented team to make as much noise as possible around a brilliant list”.
Jones has previously worked in strategic communications roles for Channel 4 and MySpace as well as Penguin, and on consumer campaigns and projects featuring names such as Gordon Ramsay, Ricky Gervais, Florence & The Machine, Seth Godin, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and Rob Brydon.
His appointment comes hard on the heels of a sales restructure at S&S, merging its adult and children’s teams.
The appointments mark a separation of the the marketing, publicity and sales director roles, formerly held jointly by James Horobin, who left the company in March.
