Tindal Street signs festival find

Tindal Street Press has acquired a debut novel after discovering the author at a writing festival.

Editor Luke Brown bought world rights to Robyn directly from author Deborah Morgan. He discovered her work when judging a "Pulp Idol" competition at the Liverpool Writing on the Wall festival. The book tells the story of a 10-year-old Liverpool girl who is forced to steal to order by her parents.

Publishing director Alan Mahar said: "This is one of the scariest stories of a childhood in jeopardy I've ever read. It's a perceptive and truthful story of a family nightmare. Deborah Morgan has transformed her own remarkable and painful childhood into something beautifully written, without sentimentality, reminiscent of Raymond Carver."

Tindal Street plans to publish in March 2012.
