The Times has been crowned the winner of the 2012 Four Colman Getty PEN Quiz prize, which took place last night (19th November).
The newspaper's team managed to clinch the title just ahead of rivals The Telegraph, with education secretary Michael Gove answering the crucial tie-break question for The Times. The other winning team members included team leader, The Times’ literary editor Erica Wagner, editor James Harding and Ben MacIntyre.
The event, which is one of English PEN’s major annual fundraisers, was hosted by journalist, TV presenter and comedian, Hardeep Singh Kholi. Other guests included Joan Bakewell, Susie Boyt, Daisy Goodwin, Charlie Higson, Tom Holland, Nick Hornby, Kate Mosse, Ferdinand Mount, Philip Norman, Richard Preston, Andrew Rawnsley, Tom Weldon and president of English PEN, Gillian Slovo.
Jo Glanville, director of English PEN, said: “Remarkably this is the 11th anniversary of the PEN Quiz. It remains the flagship event for English PEN and the biggest public fundraiser of our year."
The quiz provides funds to support PEN's work defending freedom of expression, campaigning on behalf of persecuted writers worldwide and promoting literature and literacy.
