William Collins has acquired Senator Elizabeth Warren’s "important" new book This Fight is Our Fight: The Battle to Save Working People for publication on 4th May 2017.
Arabella Pike, William Collins publishing director, acquired UK and commonwealth rights from US publishers Metropolitan Books.
The publisher said: "One of America's leading progressive voices, Elizabeth Warren, made news earlier this month after she was ejected from the Senate floor for highlighting the new attorney general’s troubling history on racial matters and civil rights. Her fiery denunciations of corporate greed have long made her a political celebrity and her stand against Jeff Sessions confirmed her once again as one of the Democratic Party’s most influential leaders.
Senator Warren's book tells the story of how the United States built the greatest middle class in history, and how big corporations and financial institutions then came to overpower the interests of poor, lower-income, and middle class people. The story moves from president Roosevelt's New Deal, to president Reagan's disastrous trickle-down economics, to president Trump's phoney promises that are pushing the middle class ever closer to collapse."
Written in the "forthright, inspiring" voice that is Senator Warren's trademark, her book delivers a "rousing" call to action and an outline of how government can better serve the people who work hard every day but now face such an uncertain future, according to the publisher. It will also provide "candid" accounts of her battles in the Senate, "vivid" stories about her life and work, and "powerful" descriptions of the experience of working people who have too often suffered under economic policies that "leave them out in the cold".
Pike said: "Elizabeth Warren is a fighter whose most potent weapon is her ability to communicate - to let the world know about the wrongs that she seeks to right. Her personal experience growing up in a working class family, and the urgency of her message about America’s current trajectory make this book especially timely and important. The meme that spread across the world two weeks ago – ‘Nevertheless, She Persisted’ – is a rallying cry for the millions of people who do not wish to build walls or put up barriers to free trade and fairness in our society. Her book will help give voice to those who wish for a different type of future."
Warren said: "Washington works great for the rich and powerful who can hire armies of lawyers and lobbyists, but it is not working very well for everyone else. America's once solid middle class is on the ropes, and now Donald Trump and his administration seem determined to deliver the knock-out punch. At this perilous moment in our country's history, it's time to fight back - and I'm looking for more people to join me."
