HarperCollins imprint The Friday Project is to release a physical edition of the new album from cult band Throwing Muses, in a book and CD collection to be available through bookshops.
Titled Purgatory/Paradise, it will consist of a 64-page text alongside a 32-track album. The rights to both were signed directly by Friday Project publisher Scott Pack with the band themselves.
The album, which is the first new music from the band in more than 10 years, will be released in October 2013 at a price of £14.99, and sold in both book shops and record stores. It will also be available separately on vinyl and as an MP3 download.
For the Friday Project edition, Kristin Hersh, the lead singer of the band, has written extensive notes and essays to accompany each song, while drummer David Narcizo has designed the book and artwork. Both members have contributed photography. The book and CD release will also feature exclusive content including a commentary track by Hersh and Narcizo, an instrumental version of the full album and MP3 versions of the tracks to download with embedded data, artwork and lyrics.
Pack said: "For it to be their first new release in a decade really is a coup. I am particularly pleased that the band have agreed to make extra material available making this physical edition the must-have version of the album."
Throwing Muses were originally formed in 1983 in Boston by step-sisters Hersh and Tanya Donelly. They were the first band to sign to independent record label 4AD, and have since released five full length albums and several solo projects. The current line-up is completed by Bernard Georges.
