Throne of Glass colouring book from Bloomsbury

Bloomsbury Children’s Books has acquired the world rights to The Throne of Glass Coloring Book, based Sarah J. Maas’ Throne of Glass series.

The series of fantasy novels, about an 18-year-old assassin named Celaena Sardothien, includes Throne of Glass, Crown of Midnight, Heir of Fire and Queen of Shadows. Two more novels are planned.

Maas said she was “unbelievably ecstatic” to see the world of Throne of Glass in colouring book format.

She said: “True story: my last semester of college (when I was still toiling over the early drafts of Throne of Glass), I took a plane from New York to LA, and the little girl sitting behind me randomly gifted me a page she'd completed from her colouring book—an illustration of Cinderella. At the time, Throne of Glass was a Cinderella retelling and I was wishing and hoping and working my butt off to one day get it published. So, when I got off that plane, I kept the coloring book page she'd given me as some sort of weird sign from the universe that I was on the right path toward making my dream come true.”

Bloomsbury Children’s US editorial director Catherine Onder acquired world rights from Tamar Rydzinski at the Laura Dail Literary Agency. Publication is scheduled globally for September 2016 to coordinate with the release of the fifth book in the series.

“Sarah and the Throne of Glass series have been at the forefront of YA fantasy since the first book was published in 2012, and now she continues to lead with this first colouring book for a YA series,” said Onder. “I, along with millions of fans, can’t wait to see the characters and scenes come to life on the page.”

In the UK, Maas’ book sales have totalled £754,195 to date, according to Nielsen BookScan. Her titles have been translated into 25 languages and she was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize in 2013.
