New independent publisher Orenda Books has made a flurry of new acquisitions since launching just last month.
Orenda Books founder Karen Sullivan has acquired world English language rights for Canada-Australia writer Paul E Hardistry’s debut eco-thriller The Abrupt Physics of Dying.
The book will be published in digital first with the e-book out next month and in print in March 2015.
Sullivan will also publish Hardisty’s sequel, The Evolution of Fear, in a deal negotiated with Broo Doherty at DHH Literary Agency. The novel will be published early in 2016.
Sullivan said: “The Evolution of Fear marks the return of utterly brilliant protagonist Claymore Straker, who made his own debut in The Abrupt Physics of Dying. Before the latter book was even published, I knew that I had to lay my hands on the sequel. Hardisty is an extraordinarily gifted writer and his Yemen-set eco-thrillers mark a fabulous addition to the thriller market.”
Hardisty will be visiting the UK in March to launch The Abrupt Physics of Dying, and returning to appear at CrimeFest in May.
Sullivan has also signed world English language rights excluding America for Finnish crime writer Kati Hiekkapelto’s The Defenceless.
The deal was negotiated with Leenastiina Kakko of Otava Group Agency and the novel will be translated by David Hackston and published in 2015.
Sullivan said: “I’m ecstatic to have signed Kati for Orenda, and very much look forward to publishing the sequel to The Hummingbird, with fabulous protagonists Anna and Esko returning for a new series of crimes. Kati is a fresh, stunning new voice on the Nordic noir scene, and she’s also an extraordinary woman. You can expect to see lots of her in the coming year, with a film in the pipeline and numerous festival appearances booked.”
Hiekkapelto said: “For a Finnish writer, being published in English has always been a bit of a pipe dream, as it’s often difficult to find a publisher. Working with Orenda Books seems like double luck. With Karen’s passion for and devotion to her writers, nothing seems impossible! I’m really happy to work with her.”
Hiekkapelto joins previous signings Gunnar Staalesen, David F Ross, Ragnar Jónasson and Paul E Hardisty in the current Orenda Books portfolio.
