Headline has bought three novels by screenwriter and author Adam Hamdy.
Pendulum, the name of the first book and the series, is described as "a twisting, dangerous journey through a digital underworld" and a "high-concept thriller", seeing "everyman" John Wallace targeted for death by a serial killer. When a quirk of fate allows him to escape, Wallace goes on the hunt determined to find the answer for why someone wants him to die.
Vicki Mellor negotiated a three book deal for World rights, with translation rights controlled by Headline, from Hannah Sheppard at the DHH Literary Agency.
Vicki Mellor, deputy publishing director for fiction, said: "As soon as I started reading the partial for Pendulum, I knew that I had to publish it. Adam is incredibly talented and his background as a screenwriter means that his action scenes literally jump off the page. This is a brilliant novel about how we interact with our friends, family and more importantly strangers in this increasingly connected world. It’s a world of infinite possibilities and incredible dangers and Adam explores it with a skill that is both analytical and exciting. I couldn’t be happier about helping Adam bring the Pendulum world to the reading public."
Hamdy is an author, screenwriter and filmmaker who has worked with producers and studios on both sides of the Atlantic. In addition he has adapted a number of comic books and novels for the screen, including the forthcoming film version of David Mitchell's novel, Number9Dream (Sceptre).
Hamdy said: "I’m excited to be working with Vicki and the Headline team, and am looking forward to introducing readers to John Wallace and the thrilling world of Pendulum."
Headline will publish the first formats of Pendulum in late 2016 with a paperback in early 2017, and publish further books on a yearly basis thereafter.
