Viking has bought the rights to Whitbread award-winning historian, John Guy's new book, a biography of Thomas Becket.
Viking publisher, Venetia Butterfield, bought UK and Commonwealth rights (excluding Canada) from Peter Robinson of Robinson Literary Agency.
The as-yet-untitled book, which will be published in spring 2012, will look at Becket's life as a whole up until his murder in Canterbury Cathedral.
Butterfield said: "At Viking, where powerful storytelling is at the centre of all our publishing, the opportunity to work with a historian of John Guy’s proven talent, one who has been praised by the likes of Lisa Jardine for his ‘stop-the-reader-dead-in-their-tracks gripping storytelling’, is a true delight."
Guy has previously written My Heart is My Own: The Life of Mary Queen of Scots (4th Estate), which won the 2004 Whitbread Biography and the Marsh Biography Award. Guy also wrote Tudor England (Oxford Paperbacks), The Tudors: A Very Short Introduction (Oxford Paperbacks) and A Daughter's Love: Thomas and Margaret More (4th Estate).
