Thirty-six head office staff go at Borders

The administrators of Borders have made 36 staff at the store support office on Charing Cross Road redundant. Phil Duffy, a partner at administrators MCR, said: "Following our appointment as administrators we have undertaken a review of the company’s business and operations in the context of an administration and consequently identified a number of positions that have become redundant. This has resulted in the employee redundancies being made today.

"This in no way impacts the business at a store level and I can confirm that no redundancies have been made in-store."

The book buying team is now running a skeleton staff with lifestyle and bargain buyer Radcliffe Harris, senior buyer for non-fiction John Packard, genre buyer Emma Carter, senior merchandiser Richard Humphreys and buying assistant Helen Frosi understood to be staying at Charing Cross Road.

Duffy added that the administrators were continuing to pursue parallel administration strategies by conducting closing down sales while continuing to find a buyer for all or some of the 45 Borders and Books Etc stores. He said: "Considerable interest has been expressed either in the business and/or certain stores and this interest is actively being pursued by MCR."

However, he refused to identify which businesses these could be.
