Transworld has acquired "dark and stirring" novel The Orphan Master's Son by Adam Johnson. Senior editor Jane Lawson snapped up UK and Commonwealth rights from Joelle Dieu, associate director of foreign rights at Random House US.
Lawson said: "A dark and stirring novel set in North Korea, possibly the most secretive, paranoid and brutal nation in the world, it tells of an orphan who murders a high-ranking commander and takes his place. In the tradition of 1984 and The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, it is the bravest, most ambitious storytelling to come from the US all year."
Transworld will publish on the Doubleday imprint in January 2012.
