Librarian jailed for stealing books

A librarian in Wales has been jailed after stealing books from her workplace and trying to sell them online.

Elizabeth Macregor, 57, from Hirwaun in South Wales, stole hundreds of books from Pontypridd Library in Rhondda Cynon Taff, reported the BBC.

A police investigation found some of the titles missing from the library on sale from her eBay account, including Aberfan - A Disaster and its Aftermath by Joan Miller (Constable) which was listed at £400.

Officers recovered several hundreds of books from Macregor's home, although some were damaged by fire after she tried to burn them. Others were found in her green recycling bin.

Macregor had argued that she had bought the books from various libraries which had sold them as excess stock.

She was sent to prison for eight months after being found guilty of two counts of theft and perverting the course of justice at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court.
