TBD needs "freedom" post Amazon takeover - IPG

The Independent Publishers Guild has accepted the OFT’s decision to clear the merger of Amazon and The Book Depository, but called on Amazon to “work hard” with its members to allay their concerns.

Following a survey, IPG members had expressed fears the merger might lead to more pressure on publishers to agree to less favourable terms, as well as arguing the deal might lead to a reduced book choice for UK consumers.

IPG chief executive Bridget Shine said: “We hope that The Book Depository, whose independent and innovative approach to online bookselling has been much admired by IPG members, will continue to have the freedom to develop its own character and strategy under Amazon.”
