Culture secretary Andy Burnham has advised Wirral council to involve the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) in discussions about the future of their library service.
The Department of Culture, Media and Sport spokesperson made the information public after shadow arts minister Ed Vaizey heavily criticised Burnham for failing to intervene over Wirral's confirmed plan to close 11 libraries. Vaizey claimed Burnham was "ignoring his responsibilities as secretary of state".
The DCMS pokesperson said Burnham "has encouraged the Wirral to involve the MLA in their discussions, in their role as the national strategic body for the library sector, and as a source of best practice advice and as a facilitator for dialogue with sector peers."
