Independent publisher Swift Press has acquired Ruth Stiles Gannett's 1948 My Father’s Dragon trilogy, its first children's titles, ahead of a Netflix adaptation from Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon.
Aimed at readers aged six to 11, the first title in the trilogy, My Father's Dragon, was first published in 1948 and was a Newbery Honor Book. Elmer and the Dragon followed in 1951 and The Dragons of Blueland followed a year later. All three titles have been continuously in print in America since their publication.
Mark Richards, publisher, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, to the three titles, from Jocelyn Lange at Random House Children’s Books US. My Father’s Dragon will be published by Swift Press on 4th November 2021 and will feature the original black and white illustrations from the author’s stepmother, artist Ruth Chrisman Gannett.
Richards said: "My Father’s Dragon is the first children’s title for Swift Press and we’re proud to reintroduce this classic fantasy trilogy to UK readers. The acclaimed stories of Elmer Elevator and the flying baby dragon have delighted children and their parents in America for generations. We will publish the three timeless tales this November, complete with the enchanting original illustrations, to introduce them to new audiences ahead of the Netflix film of My Father’s Dragon from Oscar-nominated Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon."
