Summer Reading Challenge to have circus theme

The theme of next year's Summer Reading Challenge (SRC) is "Circus Stars".

Chosen to tie in with the run-up to the Olympics in 2012, it has been described by the organisers as "the reinvention of the circus for the 'Glee' generation—big on spectacle and razzmatazz".

The SRC will begin selecting titles for the book collections that will support the challenge, which encourages children to read at least six books over the summer holidays, in the next few weeks. The collections feature new reads for 4–11-year-olds.

Although children can choose any books to read as part of the SRC, many libraries buy the official collections to provide fresh stock for the challenge.

Last year the SRC moved away from a single library supplier model to a multi-supplier model, generating a slight increase in the number of authorities that purchased the selection to 57% and in the number of collections sold to 1,750.

Some 765,000 children participated in the Space Hop 2010 challenge, an increase of more than 5.5% on 2009.
