Suffolk community-run libraries set for April 2012

Fourteen Suffolk libraries will be run by community groups from April 2012 as part of a "pilot project" for the county.

Groups will take over part or all of the running of the libraries in Aldeburgh, Bungay, Eye, Debenham, Stradbroke, Gainsborough, Chantry, Ipswich, Stoke, Rosehill, Westbourne, Sudbury, Thurston and Wickham Market, according to a report in the East Anglia Daily Times.

Some of the libraries will be grouped into clusters, working together, making a total of seven projects in all. The organisations involved in running the groups include town and parish councils, community groups, a staff collective and an independent community company.

Suffolk county council said the pilot will be used to assess the how well community-run library services work, with the plan intended to enable the council to keep its 30 libraries open while saving 30% of the budget over three years.
