Seven French unions have called the staff of cultural product chain FNAC and other companies in the Pinault Printemps Redoute (PPR) Group out on strike tomorrow (Tuesday, 28th April) in protest against job cuts.
The walkout, the first involving all the PPR companies, is being staged ahead of the general shareholders meeting on 7th May.
The unions accuse the management of a "purely financial logic" and condemn the 1,900 layoffs in France, including 400 at the FNAC, when the group has been reporting healthy profits and plans to distribute €418m in dividends for 2008.
The unions have also sent letters to Labour Minister Brice Hortefeux and PPR chairman and chief executive Francois-Henri Pinault, which call for urgent negotiations with Pinault and for the shareholders to give up their dividends and invest the €418m in the group.
