S&S US does global deal for 1D fan fiction

Simon & Schuster (S&S) in the US has acquired global rights to a Wattpad novel inspired by boy band One Direction, in a mid-six figure dollar deal.

After by Anna Todd is about an 18-year-old called Tessa who meets Harry, a “rude boy” who has “too many tattoos and piercings”. Over the course of the story she also meets his friends Niall, Liam, Zayn and Louis. On Wattpad, the fiction has already attracted more than a million readers and 800 million reads.

S&S will publish the book in three volumes, with the first due for release in November, according to Publishers Weekly.

Books two and three will follow in January and March next year.

S&S’s Adam Wilson told PW that the story will be edited prior to publication. “We’re committed to keeping the story people know but we want to reach traditional readers as well,” he said.

The names of the characters inspired by the real-life members of One Direction will be changed, although heroine ‘Tessa’ will stay the same. On Twitter, Todd said the name of the Harry character will still begin with an H, meaning fans can still use the "ship" handle of "Hessa". ("Shipping" is a term often used in fan fiction to pair up characters from books or films in a relationship, as in Harmony, meaning Harry Potter and Hermione Granger).

Simon & Schuster UK said it is in talks with the US over publishing the book.
