S&S snaps up self-published McGuire

Simon & Schuster has snapped up a two-book deal from self-published author Jamie McGuire in a “heated bidding war".

Beautiful Disaster, which has been climbing up the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists since being self-published in May 2011 as an e-book and in October as a trade paperback, will be published by S&S as an e-book today (12th July) and be followed with a paperback in August.

World English language rights were acquired by Simon & Schuster US’s Atria editor Amy Tannenbaum with Rebecca Watson of Valerie Hoskins Associates Ltd, the same agency which represents E L James, author of Fifty Shades of Grey.

It tells the story of a young woman who has escaped a painful past only to find herself torn between two men: one who represents safety and security, and another who seems likely to pull her back toward danger.

Maxine Hitchcock, Simon & Schuster UK fiction editorial director, said: “Jamie McGuire has become the latest self-publishing phenomenon by creating a truly addictive book, one which hundreds of thousands of readers are discussing with huge excitement online, likening the relationship between the book’s main characters to Edward and Bella’s in the Twilight series.

"We all know from the phenomenal success of Fifty Shades of Grey that it all starts from reader passion and recommendation—online or in the physical world—and this is certainly the case with Beautiful Disaster."

McGuire’s second book, Walking Disaster, will be published in 2013.
