S&S scoops Deonn's 'inspired' YA debut

Simon & Schuster Children's is to publish Legendborn by debut novelist Tracy Deonn this autumn.

Managing director Rachel Denwood acquired UK and Commonwealth rights in a deal with Andrea Barzvi at Empire Literary. The novel is set to launch in the UK simultaneously with Margaret McElderry Books, the US imprint which publishes YA fantasy authors, inclduing Cassandra Clare and Holly Black.

The synopsis states: "Legendborn offers the dark allure of Cassandra Clare’s City of Bones with a modern-day twist on classic Arthurian legend and a lot of Black Girl Magic. When 16-year-old Bree Matthews witnesses a terrifying demon attack she enters the world of the ‘Legendborn’, a secret society descended from the knights of King Arthur. Can Bree embrace her own unique magical powers, unravel a family mystery that she’d rather run away from and choose the right side in the impending magical war?"

Denwood said: "What a thrill to feel a wave of excitement for Legendborn surging across the Atlantic! Tracy Deonn is set to be a huge new name in YA contemporary fantasy and her spin on Arthurian legend is frankly inspired. In Bree Matthews, we have a heroine full of fight and valor—YA readers will take her to their hearts and root for her through every twist and turn of this expertly plotted, high stakes story. Legendborn is the start of something big for Tracy Deonn and everyone at S&S UK is right behind her!"

Deonn has previously worked in live theatre, video game production and education. In addition to writing, she is a frequent panellist at science fiction and fantasy conventions. She said: "I am ecstatic about Legendborn finding a home in the UK! In particular, because the story has such deep connections to UK literature and Arthurian legends. I always wanted Legendborn to feel like a true contemporary fantasy, weaving in real world history alongside believably ancient magic—and integrating Welsh vocabulary with the help of a Wales-based consultant and medievalist. Naturally, much of my research led me to the UK, so this feels like coming full circle. Legendborn is truly the book of my heart, and I am so excited to share it with new readers!"

S&S will publish the book on 15th September, in paperback, e-book and audiobook formats.
