Simon & Schuster Children’s UK will publish Slug in Love written by Rachel Bright and illustrated by Nadia Shireen.
Picture book editorial director Helen Mackenzie Smith acquired world rights for the text from Mandy Suhr at Miles Stott Children’s Literary Agency and world rights for the illustrations from Jo Unwin at Jo Unwin Literary Agency. Publication is set for 14th February 2021. Slug in Love is about Doug, a lonely slug, and his adventures to find love.
Smith said: "This is a really important new partnership for our picture book list. Having been lucky enough to work with both Rachel and Nadia before, I am so delighted to be bringing them together for the first time. Doug the slug and Gail the snail are the heroes we need right now and this unpredictable love story will capture hearts everywhere!"
Bright said: "Working with the wonderful Nadia and amazing Helen and her team on this particular book feels, akin to Doug & Gail’s story itself, like star-crossed, strangers-on-a-drain, creative fate! Ever since I picked up my pencil to write their story, I've had a smile on my face. Hopefully everyone who meets them in this story will feel like that too. I’m so grateful to S&S for introducing them to the world!"
Shireen added: "I’m absolutely over the moon to be working with the phenomenal Rachel Bright on this sweet and funny text. I am aware that the gastropod community is often woefully misrepresented. However, I will do my best to honour them, and I hope they take my visual interpretations with a pinch of salt."
