Simon & Schuster has bought a memoir by US congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who was gravely wounded in a shooting earlier this year which cost the lives of six people.
The book, Gabby: A Story of Courage and Hope, will be co-written with her husband Mark Kelly, a US Navy captain and astronaut. World and audio rights were acquired from Robert B Barnett by Susan Moldow, executive vice-president and publisher, and Nan Graham, senior vice-president and editor in chief of Scribner.
The memoir will recount the couple's early relationship, Giffords' rise in US politics and her shooting and subsequent recovery. Giffords was shot at point blank range in January at a public event in Arizona, when the gunman killed six people and wounded 12 others.
S&S UK will release the book on its global publication date of 15th November 2011. S&S US has a hardcover first printing of 500,000 copies. Suzanne Baboneau, S&S UK publishing director, said: "The events of that Saturday, 8th January 2011, stopped us all in our tracks. We didn’t cease caring once the story had fallen from our front-page news. Now we have the privilege of meeting this remarkable couple on the pages of this utterly compelling memoir."
