Sphere signs post-war shopgirl story

Sphere has signed a non-fiction title from Ellee Seymour, which will explore the story of women working at a department store.

The Shop Girls focuses on the family-run Cambridge department store Heyworth's and five women who worked there following the Second World War. Seymour has interviewed more than a dozen women who worked in the store during the 1940s and 50s to research the book.

Oliva Morris at Diane Banks Associates sold UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, in The Shop Girls to Hannah Boursnell at Sphere.

Morris said: "When Ellee first mentioned this project to me I could immediately see the potential to tap into the current fascination with department stores following the success of ITV’s 'Mr Selfridge' which will be going into its second series next year. A job in a department store back then offered these women unprecedented opportunities, not to mention fun and lifelong friendships.”

Boursnell said: “The Shop Girls will be a real treat for fans of 'Mr Selfridge' and 'The Paradise', providing a fascinating insight into the lives of the women who worked in an upscale department store during the 1940s and 50s."

It will be published in September 2014.
