Spanish-language market held back

<p>High illiteracy rates, unstable economies, poor distribution and flagrant acts of piracy are holding back growth for Spanish language publishing, delegates at the 19th International Rights Directors Meeting on Wednesday were told.

Despite the fact that Spanish is the first language for around 400 million people, speaker Valerie Miles of Grupo Planeta said the publishing sector had been stagnating for the past few years.
One explanation given was low reading levels: Spain has one of the lower reading rates in Europe, according to agent Beatriz Coll, while in Latin America and the US readers are only to be found in urban centres.
