Sony to launch e-Reader in Germany spring '09

Sony is planning to launch its e-Reader device in Germany next spring exclusively through bookshops.

The Japanese media company has announced a joint partnership with wholesaler Libri and Germany's largest book chain Thalia to market the Sony reader PRS-505. A price for the device, expected to be in shops by March, has yet to be set.

In contrast to the UK, where Waterstone's had an exclusive option for two weeks, and France where Fnac is selling the e-Reader exclusively for a period of six months, the device will be available to all German booksellers from day one, but Thalia will be Sony's "premium" bookshop partner.

Both companies are working on a joint marketing campaign for the device and e-books in general, details of which have yet to be announced. Thalia intends to sell the readers in at least 170 of its 240 branches.

E-books will be marketed as "the fifth sales channel" in addition to hardbacks, paperbacks, DVD and audio books. They will be available for purchase from

Libri, which is to organise and host the range of e-books for the Sony Reader, said it aimed to have thousands of titles available on launch day, including some of the latest bestsellers. The wholesaler will also actively promote the device and e-books among its customers.
