Sondheim memoir to Virgin Books

<p>Virgin editorial director Louisa Joyner has bought a two-volume memoir by giant of the musical theatre Stephen Sondheim. </p><p>The deal was conducted with Sara Menguc, the British co-agent of Sondheim&#39;s long-time agent Helen Brann, for an undisclosed sum. US rights went to Alfred A Knopf. </p><p>The first volume, <em>Finishing the Hat</em> - named after a song from Sondheim&#39;s &quot;Sunday in the Park with George&quot; - will be published in autumn 2010, when the composer and lyricist turns 80, and Sondheim will be in the UK for publication. A second volume, <em>Look, I Made a Hat</em>, will follow in 2011. </p><p>Sondheim, whose career has spanned over half a century, earning him an Academy Award, eight Tony Awards, Grammy Awards and a Pulitzer Prize, is the creator of famous scores including &quot;A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum&quot;, Follies&quot;, &quot;Into the Woods&quot; and &quot;Sweeney Todd&quot;. He also wrote the lyrics to musicals &quot;West Side Story&quot; and &quot;Gypsy&quot;. </p><p>The publisher said: &quot;These two beautifully produced companion volumes will be rich with history, gossip and delightful details, bringing us back to a time when theatre was truly one of the pillars of culture.&quot; Virgin said there would be &quot;many personal photographs of Sondheim with his contemporaries and collaborators.&quot;</p>
