The Octopus imprint Mitchell Beazley is publishing the first book from the elusive Sock Club.
Socks: The Rule Book (£10, March 2016) lists 10 essential rules that male sock-wearers should follow. Joe Cottington, commissioning editor at Octopus, explained: “It’s a secret, members-only club, established to elevate and champion men’s hosiery. It’s all very tongue in cheek, with members known only by their membership number, never by name.”
Cottington approached members 001 and 002, the founders, about a project. He said: “Wonderful though socks are, the potential for fashion disasters is really quite high so I approached them to see if they would be interested in establishing some universal rules for sock-wearing men to live by. They are always eager to spread the joy of socks, and jumped at the chance.”
The book explains which socks to wear with brogues, how to choose which colour socks to wear with which outfit, and how high up to roll a trouser leg when wearing socks with sneakers. Cottington said: “As well as the classic, formally dressed sock aficionado, there is a whole new generation of younger sock fans who are pairing stylish socks with sneakers and streetwear. The book lays down the rules for every facet of sock-wearing.”
