The Society of Authors and the Historical Writers' Association will have affiliate membership facilities from 1st December, with existing members of one eligible for a discounted membership fee in their first year of joining the other.
The discount will be 25% of the membership fee, with HWA members who paid the full rate last year, the organisation's first year, and who are members of the SoA being offered the same deal.
The societies said this was a "first step" in a wider process of affiliation which "will see closer links between the two associations to further forge their mutual aim of providing professional and social support for authors".
HWA chair Manda Scott said: "We are honoured and delighted to be able to offer this service to our membership and hope the coming years see a strengthening of the obvious link between our two associations. Anything that can help us offer support to writers in the current economic climate has to be worth pursuing."
SoA general secretary Nicola Solomon said: "We are delighted to be strengthening our links with the Historical Writers' Association. We are always keen to work together with organisations which serve writers and broaden the range of services and benefits we offer."
The HWA was founded in October 2010, with Michael Morpurgo appointed its inaugural president.
