Sky has announced it is commissioning a new children’s series based on The Brilliant World of Tom Gates (Scholastic) by Liz Pichon.
Aimed at children aged seven to 12, the series is set to premiere on Sky Kids UK in early 2021, to coincide with the 10th anniversary year of the first Tom Gates book, and the publication of the 18th book in series Tom Gates: Ten Tremendous Tales. It will be available to view on demand in the UK and Ireland.
Lucy Murphy, director of Kids Content at Sky UK & Ireland, said: “I absolutely love the Tom Gates books! Liz Pichon has a brilliant knack of knowing what kids find funny and engaging and I’m delighted to team up with TG Entertainment to bring Tom’s world to the screen for Sky Kids. I know our audience will love this show and be inspired by Tom and Liz to get crafty and creative."
The series will feature a combination of 2D and stop-motion animation, with live action footage, and include interactive games, songs and jokes.
Pichon (pictured) has been named as an executive producer of the series. She said: “This TV show is exactly the kind of programme that I would have loved to watch as a kid and been completely obsessed by. It’s going to be funny and bursting with creativity. All the things kids love about the books and so much more. I am thrilled that Sky has commissioned it (thank you!) and I’m looking forward to bringing the whole world to life with the very talented and hugely enthusiastic team at TG Entertainment.”
The series will be produced by TG Entertainment, a company jointly owned by Black Camel Pictures and Wild Child Animation, with additional investment from Screen Scotland. Ian France, commissioning editor for Sky Kids, will oversee the production.
