Waterstones is to close six of its 12 campus stores and has entered into a consultation with 28 staff.
The stores marked for closure are in Birmingham, Bradford, Coventry, Derby, Keele and Swansea. Closures will take place on 26th April.
The company said it hopes to redeploy as many of the 28 booksellers to its other stores as possible.
A spokesman for the company said: "We thank all those that have served in the affected shops, and the many students and other customers and institutions that have supported them over the years."
Despite the closures, Waterstones was adamant it remains "committed to the academic market and to its core of profitable campus shops" and will make a "significant investment" in those stores, including the flagships of Gower Street in London and Hodges Figgis in Dublin.
