Prep author Curtis Sittenfeld is moving from Picador to Transworld for her next book, American Wife. Transworld's Katie Espiner struck the deal for UK and Commonwealth rights with Cathryn Summerhayes at the William Morris Agency for a "strong" five-figure advance.
American Wife is loosely based on the life of Laura Bush, telling the story of an ordinary young woman who becomes the First Lady of the US. Doubleday will publish in hardback in February 2009.
Espiner said: "Curtis Sittenfeld is an exceptionally talented writer. I have always been a huge fan of her books and I am absolutely delighted that we will be publishing her here at Transworld. There has been a phenomenal reaction to American Wife in-house."
Sittenfeld was shortlisted for the Orange Prize for Prep, which Picador published in 2005.
