Serpent's Tail signs new Attenberg

Serpent's Tail has acquired a new novel from The Middlesteins author Jami Attenberg.

Saint Mazie is based on the true story of Mazie Phillips, a working-class woman who ran a cinema and helped the homeless in a run-down part of New York during the early 20th century.

Hannah Westland signed UK and Commonwealth rights excluding Canada from Shirley Stewart on behalf of Doug Stewart at Sterling Lord. Saint Mazie will be published in the US by Grand Central.

Westland said: "Inspired by the real life story of a woman in early twentieth century New York who lived life on her own terms long before it was acceptable to do so, and took care of the city’s down and outs, Saint Mazie is written with trademark Attenberg brilliance."

Attenberg said Mazie was: "a thoroughly modern woman in a time of great change . . . She lived through Prohibition, the Depression, and both World Wars, all while leading this free-spirited, singular existence."

Serpent's Tail, a Profile Books imprint, will publish in spring 2015. The Middlesteins is currently a Waterstones Book Club selection.
