A self-published title has been included in the shortlist for the CMI Management Book of the Year for the second year in a row.
Management: A General Theory by John R Berry (Discoverer) has made the New Manager category this year, following in the footsteps of The Psychological Manager: Improve Your Performance Conversations by Peter Storr, published via lulu.com, which was on the 2012 list.
Also in the New Manager category is Keeping up with the Quants by Thomas H Davenport and Jinho Kim (Harvard Business Review Press); Never Mind the Bosses by Robin Ryde (John Wiley); Managing to Manage by Derek Torrington (Kogan Page); and Winning Without Losing by Martin Bjergegaard and Jordan Milne (Profile Books).
Facebook c.o.o. Sheryl Sandberg has been shortlisted in the Commuter's Read category for her book Lean In (W H Allen). Other entries in this category are Rolf Dobelli's The Art of Thinking Clearly (Sceptre); Jacqueline Biggs' Marketing to Win (Rethink Press); Henry Stewart's The Happy Manifesto (Kogan Page); and Ray Hutton's Jewels in the Crown (Elliott and Thompson).
In the Practical Manager category, Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital c.e.o. Jan Filochowski's Too Good to Fail? (Financial Times Publishing) goes up against Shortcuts to Success by Elizabeth Harrin (BCS Learning and Development); From Complexity to Simplicity (Palgrave Macmillan) by Simon Collinson and Melvin Jay; Decisive (Random House) by Chip Heath and Dan Heath; and Manager as Coach by Jenny Rogers, Karen Whittleworth and Andrew Gilbert (McGraw-Hill).
Financial Times Publishing has another title in the Innovation and Entrepreneurship award shortlist, The Ten Principles Behind Great Customer Experiences by Matt Watkinson. Also competing for this award are Bloomsbury's Light Footprint Management by Charles-Edouard Bouée; John Wiley and Sons' Entrepreneur Revolution by Daniel Priestley; Profile Books' Inside the Box by Jacob Goldenberg; and Hodder's The Edge by Michael Heppell.
The final category for the Management and Leadership Textbook award includes International Management by Elizabeth Christopher (Kogan Page); Management Consultancy, 2nd edition by Joe O'Mahoney and Calvert Markham (Oxford University Press); Managing Value in Organisations by Donal Carroll (Gower); Practicing Strategy by Sotirios Paroutis, Loizos Heracleous and Duncan Angwin (Sage); and Understanding Enterprise by Simon Bridge and Ken O'Neill (Palgrave Macmillan).
Piers Cain, head of Knowledge and Customer Insight at the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) said: “The standard has been very high this year and we are delighted with the shortlist."
The winners of the five categories and the overall winner of the £5,000 prize will be announced on 3rd February 2014.
