Transworld has bought a romantic novel by previously self-published author Cathy Bramley, to be published as a digital serial this year before paperback publication in 2015.
Harriet Bourton, senior commissioning editor at Transworld, bought World rights in the book, titled Ivy Lane, from Hannah Ferguson of The Marsh Agency.
Ivy Lane tells the story of Tilly Parker, a young woman who moves to a new town for a fresh start. Tilly signs up for a plot at the local allotment on Ivy Lane and is drawn world of the quirky characters she meets there.
It is comprised of four individual parts that are 25,000 words long – Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter – which Transworld will publish initially as e-books in their respective seasons throughout 2014.
Bourton said: “Cathy writes with an effortless warmth and humour and Ivy Lane is instantly engaging. I love the idea of consuming commercial women’s fiction as a serialised novel – just as I enjoy getting addicted to the newest TV series that everyone’s talking about. We’ll all be eager to see how the story unfolds as the year goes on, moving through the seasons alongside Tilly.”
Bramley lives in rural Nottinghamshire and runs her own PR agency. She self-published her first novel, Conditional Love, last year.
She commented on the deal: “I’ve had enormous fun with Harriet writing Ivy Lane. When Transworld approached me to write a novel that would fall naturally into parts, the idea of a year on an allotment immediately sprang to mind. Ivy Lane is perfect for serialisation and this is a concept I am keen to develop in the future.”
The first e-book, Spring, will be published on 3rd April, with Summer following on 3rd July, Autumn on 4th September and Winter on 6th November. Transworld will then publish a paperback edition of the complete novel in March 2015.
