Director of "Gladiator" Ridley Scott is to produce a four-hour mini series based on Robert Harris’ Roman Empire-based besteller Pompeii (Arrow).
The production is a partnership between Sony Pictures Television; Scott’s film and TV production company Scott Free Television; German media company Tandem Communications; and production company Peace Out Productions.
Pompeii tells the story of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in a.d. 79 through the tale of a young engineer, Marcus Attilus, who is sent to repair “the greatest aqueduct in the Roman Empire”.
Scott said "The creation of worlds - specifically those historical worlds which continue to capture the popular imagination - is what we love to do and do best. Pompeii is a strong and compelling character drama set against a backdrop of a flourishing but ultimately doomed civilisation— exactly what makes great event television."
Harris said: “There is no film-maker in the world with a stronger track-record on bringing ancient Rome to life than Ridley Scott. He is the man who reinvented the genre, and I am delighted that he will be so directly involved in the project."
Roman Polanski’s adaptation of Harris’ thriller The Ghost is out this Friday (16th April).
