Scholastic UK has signed a new two-book deal with Waterstones Children’s Book Prize shortlisted author Vashti Hardy.
Executive editor Linas Alsenas bought world rights in the invention-filled STEM series from Kate Shaw at The Shaw Agency. The books will be illustrated by George Ermos. Harley Hitch and the Iron Forest Mishap will publish in 2021.
Shaw said: “Vashti Hardy is cornering the market in STEM-and-imagination-filled stories for children at KS2 and I’m very excited about this new, illustrated series with Scholastic.”
“Harley Hitch and the Iron Forest Mishap, tells the story of young Harley Hitch, an inventor and modern day Inspector Gadget studying at Cogworks School of Invention,” reads the synopsos. “The first in the series introduces readers to a steampunk dog called Sprocket, a star chat observatory and a rusty river where one can fish for inspiration.”
Hardy said: “I’m overjoyed to be writing two new books for 7-9 year olds with Scholastic - This is something for younger readers and for all the teachers who have so keenly requested something in a similar vein to Brightstorm and Wildspark for a younger audience. Expect unbounded adventure and invention!”
Editor Linas Alsenas added: “I’m super-stoked that Vashti and George are joining forces in a new series that brings the power of invention to younger readers. With Vashti’s oceanic imagination and George’s astonishing artistic talent, there’s no doubt in my mind that Harley Hitch’s adventures will be an unforgettable literary treat!”
