Scholastic to publish two growing up guides from MacDonagh

Scholastic UK has acquired two Growing Up guides by Dr Emily MacDonagh, a practising NHS doctor, health and parenting columnist for OK! magazine and wife of Peter Andre.

Leah James, executive editor, secured world rights in all languages from Marie-Claire Giddings at The CAN Group. Growing Up for Girls: Everything You Need to Know will be published in January 2022 and Growing Up for Boys: Everything You Need to Know will follow in May 2022.

Written for readers aged nine plus and illustrated throughout, the guides will cover the physical changes of puberty as well as the psychological and emotional aspects of the subject. Readers will find out what to expect and how to get support if needed – all written from the perspective of an experienced professional.

MacDonagh, mother of two and step-mother to teenagers, commented: "I’m very excited to be writing my first book with Scholastic. Their passion for encouraging children to read is something that I really identify with, so to be given the opportunity to write a book for children is a real honour for me. Along with experts in the field, I wanted to write a book for children about the psychological and physical aspects of the journey through puberty.

"It can be a challenging time, and some children may not feel able to talk about what is worrying them. I wanted to write a book that would answer some of these questions and reassure children that their journey is unique and special to them. I’m passionate about educating children, promoting good body image and healthy minds, and I really hope that will come across in the book.”

James says: "We are thrilled to welcome Dr Emily to Scholastic to bring her experience and warmth to young readers. Puberty can be a challenging time, so it feels important to provide knowledge, support and reassurance for the children of today. In these new Growing Up books, readers will find a reassuring voice who will sensitively guide them through the changes to body and mind."
