Scholastic pinches Minchin’s Matilda

Scholastic UK has secured world rights to a picture book of the lyrics from musician, actor and comedian Tim Minchin’s song “When I Grow Up” (taken from “Matilda the Musical”), illustrated by Steve Antony.

The publisher told The Bookseller Daily at Bologna Children's Book Fair that the book will imagine, “with equal amounts of humour and pathos”, what adult life is like from a child’s perspective.

Minchin said: “I adore Steve’s work. It’s been a thrill to watch him develop his gorgeous illustrations—I can’t wait to hold a copy.”

When I Grow Up will be published in the UK in October, and in the US in summer 2018, with a major PR and marketing campaign planned.

World rights for Minchin’s text were sold by Michael Lynch of Smartartists Management to three Scholastic staffers: Ken Geist (for Scholastic US), Andrew Berkhut (for Scholastic Australia) and Samantha Smith (for Scholastic UK).

Smith sealed the rights for Antony’s illustrations from Elizabeth Roy of Elizabeth Roy Literary Agency.
