Scholastic acquires debut picture book author

Scholastic has acquired How to be a Dog, the debut title from author and illustrator Jo Williamson.

How to be a Dog is a manual for dogs told by the point of a view of a dog, so covers pressing concerns such as how to deal with humans and how to get more treats.

“When we saw the first samples from Jo, we knew we had to sign her up there and then. It was love at first sight,” said Scholastic’s editorial director for picture books, Pauliina Malinen Teodoro, who acquired the world rights in a two-book deal from Helen Mackenzie Smith at Bell Lomax Moreton.

Scholastic will publish simultaneously in paperback and hardback in July 2015.

Williamson recently graduated with an MA in children’s book illustration from the Cambridge School of Art. She is also a fashion designer.
