Schama to Collins for First World War title

<p>Historian Simon Schama is turning his attention to the First World War after signing a book deal with Collins.</p><p>Publishing director Iain MacGregor bought world rights from Caroline Michel at PFD for a strong six-figure sum. The illustrated book, <em>1914&ndash;18: The History of the British People in the Great War</em>, will be published for Christmas 2013. The book will examine how all aspects of British society, including the wider Empire, lived during the years of the Great War.</p><p>Collins said it would also publish an enhanced e-book complete with maps, timelines, video and audio content. MacGregor said as well as a strong hardback publicity campaign, there would be a big marketing drive for the paperback, which will be published on 4th August 2014, to mark the outbreak of the war 100 years previously.</p><p>MacGregor said: &quot;Simon Schama is without question Britain&#39;s most respected and widely read historian, and we intend to re-create the huge success he enjoyed with his classic series on British history over a decade ago.</p><p>&quot;The Great War shaped world events for the 20th century, and it is only right that we commemorate the 100th anniversary of its outbreak with Simon shining a light on the many millions of British people&ndash;our forefathers&ndash;who lived through these tumultuous years.&rdquo;<br /> </p>
