Sceptre buys urban debut

Jocasta Brownlee has bought for Sceptre a raw urban debut, The Illumination of Merton Browne by Justin Shaw.
Shaw's novel is about a young man who graduates from victimhood to masterminding a posse's control of a tough estate. Hiding from his mother's violent boyfriend, he takes refuge in a schoolroom full of abandoned books, and begins to educate himself. It is a "brilliantly written, page-turning story", Brownlee says.
Brownlee bought UK and Commonwealth rights (exc Canada) in two novels through Clare Alexander at Gillon Aitken.
