Derbyshire bookshop Scarthin Books has raised more than £10,000 in an appeal to fund urgent structural repairs.
Proprietor Dave Mitchell said an engineer has told him he needs to install four steel columns to support 1,000 feet of bookshelves, and has turned to Crowdfunder because he would struggle to generate the extra funds needed using other methods.
“Even if we were able to secure a small business loan, the small margins within which we operate would make it very difficult to afford,” he said. “Any small profit we do make year after year gets re-invested into the shop and its vegetarian cafe as we continue to strive to offer the 'complete bookshop experience' and an unsurpassed level of customer service.”
He had initially set a target of £2,000 but the additional funds will go towards other repair projects, including paintwork and roof repairs.
All pledgers will receive a thank-you on the bookshop website and those giving £20 or more will get a Scarthin Gift Voucher of up to 50% of the value of their payment, redeemable in the bookshop or café. Anyone pledging £250 will be given lunch for up to five people in the bookshop’s café.
